Mental health problems affect 10–20% of children and adolescents worldwide. Half of the mental disorders are estimated to have onset by the age of 14 years. Early identification and treatment of these disorders can improve the outcome and prognosis of psychiatric illnesses. GIH was one of the pioneering institutions in Nepal to adopt the closed ICU model, ensuring that all patients are managed under the direct supervision of intensive care specialists. It was also the first hospital in the country to introduce individual cubicle-style ICU rooms, a design that significantly reduces the risk of cross-infection while enhancing patient privacy.

In addition to the adult ICU, GIH is equipped with specialized neonatal and pediatric ICUs, each staffed by experts in their respective fields.
